How to Install a Hot Tub?

Have you always dreamed about owning a hot tub, but aren’t sure about the installation process? At Mr. Electric, we provide premium residential and commercial electrical services in Katy, Texas and nearby Houston area neighborhoods. Our licensed and insured electricians in Houston enjoy helping local clients get the most from their property, and we want to help make your next home improvement project a success. Here are some tips for properly installing a hot tub.

Choose the Best Location

The first step is to determine where your hot tub will be located. Consider the dimensions of the hot tub you want to install, and thoroughly examine your property for the perfect spot. Consider proximity to neighbors, ease of access, desired level of privacy, sun exposure and other important preferences.

Create a Stable Foundation

Next, it’s time to secure a strong foundation. If you are planning to install your hot tub on an existing deck, make sure it can handle the weight of a hot tub that is full of water. Many people choose to install a concrete slab to support their hot tub. If you decide to go this route, consider the electrical needs. In some cases, you may need to run wiring in a conduit before the concrete is poured. Other options include paver stones, hot tub pads or gravel. Regardless of what type of foundation you use, ensure that it is strong and level before putting your hot tub into place.

Install or Upgrade Outdoor Electrical Outlets

Your electrical system may also need adjustments to accommodate your new hot tub. Some models require a lot of power. You may need to upgrade your existing circuit to a 220-240 volt circuit with a GCFI outlet. If so, then it’s vital that you hire a qualified electrician who can safely and accurately upgrade your outlets.

Put the Hot Tub into Position

Now, assemble the hot tub and place it into the appropriate position according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Before finalizing the position, make sure you have proper clearance and that you have access to the control panel. If you live in a home with small children or pets, you might also want to install a barrier for added safety.

Fill It with Water and Enjoy

Now, for the final step. Once your hot tub has been fully installed, you can test it. Turn off electrical power at the circuit breaker to avoid accidents. Fill the hot tub with clean, fresh water. Inspect for signs of loose fittings or leaks. When the tub is filled and you are sure it is safe, you can restore electrical power, adjust the settings and celebrate.
