Gather Your Supplies and Prepare

The first step is to gather the right supplies. You will need basic cleaning materials that are often used for clearing up any surface, such as warm water, dish soap, spray cleaning solution and microfiber cloths. Since many light fixtures are placed high on a wall or mounted on the ceiling, you will also need a sturdy step ladder and an extendable duster. You may also want to wear gloves or other protective gear to keep dirt and dust away from your hands and face. Be sure to turn off the lights of any fixture you want to clean up at least 30 minutes before you start. This will help keep burns at a minimum. If you need to remove any fixture elements, then you will also need to turn off the electrical power to the circuit you are working on to avoid electrocutions and other hazards. 

Simple Light Fixtures 

Basic ceiling mounted light fixtures, sconces or lamps can be cleaned relatively easily. First, use a microfiber cloth or duster to remove the initial layer of dust and debris. Then fill a container with warm water and a gentle dish soap. Carefully take off the light covers and toss out any loose items into the garbage can. Place the components into the soapy water for 10 minutes. While the items are soaking, unscrew the light bulbs and clean them carefully with an appropriate cleaning solution and cloth rag. Let the pieces dry and put them back, making sure to clamp or screw the fixtures down securely.

Chandeliers, Vintage Brass and Recessed Lights

More complex designs may require a few additional steps from those listed above. For instance, vintage brass fixtures can be best cleaned with either ketchup or a combination of lemon juice and table salt, followed by a quick rinse with soap and water. These kitchen staples will provide the right amount of acid to rub away accumulated debris, and to help revitalize their brilliant shine. Recessed can lights and flush mounted light covers can be tricky to work with. Be sure to follow the manufacturers instructions when removing the items for cleaning. Chandeliers and other ornate fixtures should also be treated with extra care. Some items such as polychrome glass should not be soaked in water, instead use a few cotton swabs dipped in a cleaning solution and gently rub until clean.
